Green is the New Black
What does it mean to consume fashion consciously?
This is a loaded question that likely means different things to different people. I encourage you to define what this means for you. If it’s a new concept for you, start small (like me).
The overarching ethos that underpins The Eighty Twenty Collection is to consume quality fashion over quantity. The negative environmental impact of the fast fashion industry is well founded and documented. Australians are the second largest consumers of textiles, with over 500,000 tonnes of textiles ending up in landfill each year. Consumption of fashion has sadly become buy cheap poor quality items, wear them a few times, discard them…and repeat. As a nation, on average each person is buying 27kg of textiles annually, and sending 23kg to landfill. The majority of textiles that end up in landfill are made from non-biodegradable synthetic or plastic fibres. Shocking stats!
To combat over consumption of fashion we need to make mindful purchasing decisions. I have linked a couple of tools that are easy to use to help you achieve this. The Essentials Checklist and the How to Simplify step by step process can really help guide and prioritise your purchases.
I have reflected on my younger years and my previous tendency to KEEP items of clothing for special occasions. Sometimes I have worn these carefully stored items (lost in the back of my wardrobe somewhere) once or twice and then felt I COULDN’T be seen wearing them again.
HELLO impulse spending to get that new outfit.
HELLO imperfect outfit choices.
HELLO new accessories to match imperfect outfit.
HELLO oversized wardrobe. I’m sure I’m not alone!
Out with my old approach to consuming fashion and in with the new.
I now purchase a new fashion piece because I need it, I love it, it aligns with my lifestyle, and it compliments and adds versatility to my current wardrobe. For these reasons I want to wear it, enjoy it and feel fabulous in it often. I no longer need or desire a large wardrobe. I wear my favourite key pieces over and over again mixing it up to achieve multiple different looks. It feels so good to wear my favourite things all the time.
At The Eighty Twenty Collection we celebrate brands that adopt an ethical philosophy. This may be fair working conditions across the supply chain, use of organic fibres, preservation of artisan skills, small scale production or made-to-order, recycling, upcycling and/or animal cruelty free. There are amazing designers and brands creating fashion that ‘gives back’ to people, communities and the environment.
It’s a no brainer for me; if I’m consuming less, consuming with greater consciousness, and consuming high quality….why not also consume fashion from brands embracing ethical business models.
The Eighty Twenty Collection encourages women to simplify their wardrobes, consume less, and go for lasting quality and style. We also strive to raise the profile of ethical brands and make them easily accessible to busy, everyday women. Together we can have a meaningful impact, whilst looking oh-so effortlessly chic. What’s that? We can have our cake and eat it too? Yes, please. Bon appetit!
